Editorial independence policy

We serve our readers. Not the business community, not civic leaders, not even our favorite bands.

That takes a commitment to editorial independence.

Tone Madison‘s editors and writers maintain full control over what we publish, independent of financial considerations or other influences. We make editorial decisions based on what’s appropriate, what’s true, what has artistic value, and what will be valuable to our readers.

Readers provide most of our funding through small, recurring monthly donations, usually between $5 and $10. We will make public any donor who gives $1,000 or more per year.

Businesses and non-profits provide sponsorship support to Tone Madison. These sponsors are barred from any involvement in our editorial decisions. Their sponsorship gets them a display on our website, and the satisfaction of supporting valuable work.

If the world’s biggest companies can make billions of dollars in one weekend, surely our small, independent publication can raise $5,000 in five days, right?
