The Madison R&B singer gets reflective in the first single from his forthcoming “Black Gandalf” project.
Madison R&B singer and producer Ethan Jackson, better known as Mr. Jackson, told us in an interview last fallthat it’s hard to separate his music from the other artists who help him get it out there, including Madison-based filmmaker Michael Doyle Olson. The pair collaborated on two videos for last year’s album The Golden Hour Groove Session—the notoriously honey-drenched one “The Golden Treatment” and a double-feature for “Ms. L” and “Synth Bride”—and, as Jackson works on a follow-up release titled Black Gandalf, the two have created this one to accompany the contemplative funk of a new song, “Is It Her?” The video opens with a hazy drone shot panning over Madison and features a series of surreal shots of Jackson singing into a mirror in various locations. Jackson is working on getting Black Gandalf ready for release later this year, and is also working on a new collaborative side project called Blood Moon Wizards. His next Madison show is opening up for fellow Madisonians Neens’ EP release show on July 24 at Mickey’s Tavern.
