Earlier this week, we at Tone Madison rounded up our favorite music that Madison artists released during 2016. We published our top 20 Madison records of the year list, and a longer list of honorable mentions. Several Tone Madison contributors helped pick the list and write about why we chose the releases that we did. Three of them, Emili Earhart, Grant Phipps, and Mike Noto, joined me last week as we were working on the list to talk about the year in local music and the challenge of summing it all up.

In addition to the writing they do here, you can hear Emili on several WSUM shows and in the duo And Illusions, you can hear Grant spinning avant-garde music on WSUM and writing on other sites including LakeFrontRow, and you can hear Mike in the noise-punk band Coordinated Suicides. Give our conversation a listen below.
