The Madison/Milwaukee producer discusses his new release, “Summer’s End.”
The new beat tape from producer knowsthetime, Summer’s End, uses an old-school, sampling-based approach to hip-hop. But knowsthetime, real name Ian Carroll, has been all over the map. Dividing his time between Madison and Milwaukee, he’s contributed to scores of hip-hop tracks, some of them under his former production moniker *hitmayng, he co-founded the hip-hop and electronic label Catch Wreck, he’s produced a fair bit of more experimental, ambient tracks, and he’s working in a new improvisational jazz trio called KASE. Some of his best known production work has been with the rapper CRASHprez, also known as Michael Penn II. (Full disclosure, Penn has contributed to Tone Madison and is a friend of mine, and Carroll played his ambient music at a show we presented in 2017.) The two are playing a last-minute show on Saturday, September 29 at the Rathskeller.
Carroll sat down with me recently to talk about the Summer’s End tape, teaching young hip-hop artists, and where his music is going next.
