A Madison selector’s epic two-part mix spans from trap to Kate Bush to dancehall.
Cult House is a bit of a mysterious Madison entity that began as a house venue and has since branched out into other events including DJ nights, record sales, food pop-ups, and hosting shows from forward-looking electronic artists including Rabit and Elysia Crampton. Its sonic center is Dan Woodman, who creates electronic music under monikers including Lens and has increasingly branched out into DJ sets that pull together a disparate but deep range of interests.
Cult House Sound will be spinning at May 30’s Tone Madison-presented show at Communication with Ka Baird and Taralie Peterson, and at Cult House’s May 26 record sale on the 800 block of East Johnson Street. Ahead of that, Woodman has shared with us a sprawling two-part mix, titled “C90.”
“I’ve really enjoyed doing wildstyle mixes like this lately—less prep and more energy,” Woodman says. “Since I sucked it up and bought a dang deejay controller about a year ago, I’ve approached mixing much differently. It’s like a video game. So I just have fun with it and play new music that I’m excited about, regardless of genre or even mixability. This mix is like that: tons of new hype shit that I love (South African Gqom, Southern Trap, Jamaican Dancehall) but also the current underground sound-designers (Rabit, Lucy Railton), along with some of my old faves (4AD jams, Heptones) and set standards (Kate Bush and Rihanna are requisite). So pardon the sloppy mixes and I hope you dig the vibes.”
