Illustration by Rachal Duggan depicts several people protesting with signs in front of the Wisconsin Capitol building. The messages on the signs include “Protect Abortion Access… Now!” “Abortion = Healthcare,” and “My Body Is Not A Bounty.”

The battle for abortion rights reached a dire pitch this week, as the U.S. Supreme Court allowed Texas to implement a ban on abortions after six weeks—the most extreme abortion restriction to take effect since the Court’s landmark 1973 ruling in Roe V. Wade. This shift places abortion rights across the country in immediate danger. Here in Wisconsin, an abortion ban almost as old as the state itself is still on the books. If Roe were officially overturned, that law would take effect, making abortion a felony in Wisconsin. There is zero chance of Wisconsin’s state lawmakers taking action to protect abortion rights this term—our legislature is controlled by the same Republican majority that passed a number of draconian abortion restrictions during Gov. Scott Walker’s administration. The pandemic has created further barriers to abortion access in Wisconsin.

One of the most important and immediate things you can do to push back is donate to an abortion fund and help people exercise their rights to access reproductive care. The National Network of Abortion Funds has a directory of funds across the country, and of course it’s especially crucial right now to support funds in Texas. You can also start here at home with the following Wisconsin- and Midwest-specific resources.
